Horizon 2020

PROJECT MANAGER PROJECT NAME DURATION FAZOS ROLE
1. Goran Kušec, Full Professor, PhD Diversity of local pig breeds and production systems for high quality traditional products and sustainable pork chains (TREASURE)

The project was initiated within the Sustainable Food Security call (SFS-07 a-2014), and started on April 1, 2015.

25 institutions from 9 countries participate in the project, and it was selected for financing along with only two other proposals from a total of 59 applications, which emphasizes the quality and success of that consortium. Partners from Croatia are the Faculty of Agriculture in Osijek (PFOS) and the Faculty of Agriculture, Zagreb (UNIZG). The project manager is Dr. Marjeta Čandek Potokar from the Agricultural Institute of Slovenia, and the Croatian representatives in the General Assembly (GA), the main governing body of the project, are Prof. Goran Kušec, Ph.D. (PFOS) and Prof. Ph.D. Danijel Karoly (UNIZG). These two researchers actively participated in the design of the project as members of the consortium at the time of application. The project was financed with EUR 3,395,991.00 and will last 48 months.

Research activities will be focused on European local pig breeds and their husbandry systems. In the case of our country, these are black Slavonian and Turopolska pigs. The project is planned to respond to the increased demand for quality and safe pork products with a regional identity that are produced in accordance with the requirements for environmental protection, with the aim of developing local agro-economies. Also, the research involves the description of local pig breeds, especially those that are still less known on a European scale, using the latest tools of molecular genetics. The properties of these pigs will be studied in different production systems (open, closed, organic and similar), and special attention will be given to the feeding of experimental animals and management strategies within available, local resources. At the end, the quality of traditional but also innovative products originating from pigs of local breeds will be investigated, with a special focus on consumer demands and their willingness to accept the prices of these products of high quality and thus greater value. The TREASURE project is organized into work groups (work packages - WP), and the team from Osijek will participate in the following:

WP1. Characterization of regional autochthonous pig populations in Europe

WP2. Production indicators and management of local pig breeds in different production systems

WP3. Traditional and new products of high quality with regional identity

WP5. Measures to maximize project effects and dissemination of results.

The members of the research team of the Osijek Faculty of Agriculture are: Prof. Ph.D. Goran Kušec, assistant professor, Ph.D. Vladimir Margeta, assistant professor, Ph.D. Ivona Djurkin Kušec, Ph.D. Boris Lukić and Kristina Budimir mag.ing.agr.
